Star anise is a spice that comes from the fruit of the Illicium verum tree, an evergreen shrub or small tree native to southern Asia. The fruit is star-shaped, usually with eight points, and is reddish brown in color when dried. The dried carpels are hard and rough, while the seeds are smooth, lustrous, and light brown. Star anise has a sweet, warm, earthy flavor profile that's similar to anise and licorice.
