Allspice berries are the dried, unripe fruit of the Pimenta dioica tree, also known as the myrtle pepper tree or pimento. The berries are picked before they are fully ripe and then sun-dried until they turn from green to a dull reddish brown color. They are small, dark brown balls that are a little larger than peppercorns and contain two kidney-shaped dark brown seeds.
